Fred was extremely co-operative with our requests and helped us camp on a spot of our choice in spite of the weekend rush. The Yellowfish Rapids campsite is exceedingly serene and picturesque to say the least.

The showers, the pool and the fire pit facilities are well equipped and adequate. A good assortment of wild herbivores roaming in the property adds a touch of wilderness to complete the alfresco experience. We stayed at Vaal Streams recently. We wanted to camp and the costs of camping were surprisingly high. There was a charge per tent not per site as well as a charge per vehicle plus a hefty R deposit for the remote for the gate obviously refundable but still - R seems a bit steep and then if you wanted to stay past 10am on Sunday there was a day visitor's charge.
Had the amenities been top class, I would have been fine with that but unfortunately this was not the case. The road to Vaal Streams was very poorly sign posted - in fact I didn't see any signs at all. Had it not been for Google Maps, we would have really struggled to find the place. And the road itself was not great. The last 5km was kinda rough. Upon arrival, Fred greeted us and asked us to sign the serious looking indemnity form.
Not something I am used to doing when I camp but okay This top part of the resort is not too bad - lush lawn with a great pool, swings, trampolines plus ducks, geese, bunnies and peacocks. Our kids loved it. The camp sites are in 2 areas - a main section about m from the river and close to the ablutions and then another area at the river's edge without ablutions. For the cost, I would have expected beautiful, well manicured camp sites.
The main camp area had patchy grass and the sites were not levelled. And they were just not well done. I don't like to use this word but the sites were just ugly. The ablutions are newly built and look good but unfortunately don't function quite so well.
The men's showers were either too hot or too cold - couldn't get the temperature right no matter what I did. And the water all ended up running out the shower, down the ablution area and out the door. Water was literally 2cm deep in the bathrooms. Think muddy footprints. The sites down by the river were better albeit further from the bathrooms.
But there were a few pieces of litter lying around - again something that should be easy to rectify. If you are there for fishing, this part of the river is mostly rapids which is fine if you intend to flyfish. If you are fishing with bait, there aren't too many spots that would be suitable. However, the water is cooler since the Vaal dam is just upstream.
We caught one nice yellow of around 2kg but that was it despite fishing for several hours. No other fish were caught. All in all, I just felt that Vaal Streams isn't great value for money. We won't be going back I am afraid. Had the costs been less or the aesthetics better, I would have been happier. I just felt kinda disappointed. The place has an air of neglect or having been past its hayday. We stayed last weekend in one of the cute ox wagons. The gardens and pool are immaculate and it is magical to see all the gorgeous bunnies, ducks and other animals roaming the grounds.
We also met the owner, what a nice man, and so hospitable. But after check in things started to go wrong.

It is obvious to me that there is no room inspection done before guests check in. Even the towel in the bathroom still had its R Then to pay R for bedding is alright but when it is extremely worn and mismatched, as well as the factory plastic still being on the mattress it becomes insane. Instead of using a mattress protector, if they feel it is necessary, which means their guests are in for a wrinkly, crinkly and warm night, obviously protecting their mattress is more important than a guests comfort. After enjoying the stunning pool we decided to take a shower and surprise NO hot water.
We assumed that perhaps the geyser was only switched on when we arrived, so we decided to try again later. Eventually we got the second key four hours later after we chased the manager around the resort so that we could properly access our wagon and we settled in for the night. Unfortunately they booked a bachelorette party right next to us. As you can imagine a canvas flap does little to block out sound. At first it was ok but when it got louder and louder after midnight it became a pain and there was nobody to look out for the other guests. Eventually after 1pm a torrential downpour rained out their party and we could luckily get some sleep.
No rest, no time to lie in and enjoy the sounds of the river below or the birds singing, so we decided to have a shower…. Still NO hot water. We decided to give up and packed. For R a night, too little, too late. Such a beautiful setting let down by things that could be so easily fixed for their guests.
