South African women live in poverty, deal with violence and due to their status in the past, they have been identified as vulnerable and disempowered target group in social service delivery. The research study is evaluation research often used when evaluating a social programme. The integrated model of programme evaluation IMPE of De Vos is selected and adjusted for the purpose of this study. The research process is initiated with a literature study on the concepts empowerment, participation and other relevant concepts to the study.

The research is limited to the Delport informal settlement in Germiston, Gauteng. Data collection took place in the three phases of the research study. Phase one: Needs assessment, utilises key informants and a community forum. Phase two: process evaluation, utilises a semi-structured interview schedule. Phase three: Outcome evaluation, group administered questions are used. The target group of the study is women residing in Delport informal settlement. Results in the study indicated that the SAWEF lifeskills programme is effective in addressing the needs for lifeskills programme of semi-literate in an informal settlement.

It is recommended that the SAWEF lifeskills programme should be implemented more extensively and continuously evaluated to determine whether it continues to address the needs of the target group it is intended for, being women. Results and conclusions drawn from this study can not be generalised to the broader population of women in informal settlements. Nel Full Text:. Community perceptions of environmental and living conditions in the Alexandra informal settlements, Johannesburg, South Africa - Makungo, Mmbengeni Thiambiwi. The congested urban environments are especially risk ridden from pollution, sewage and crime. Most of these places are in variously steep, low-lying areas, and too close to waterways. The worst depravation that come with living in this areas are seasonal in nature, including damage by flood and unsanitary conditions from flood water mixed with sewage.

Most of the urban poor are endangered by the places and the physical conditions where they live. They experience problems with water, precarious shelter, poor sanitation and dangerous electrical connections. The poor communities build improper shelter out of the material they collect from around their place, which lack infrastructure and services provided for the better off. Perception is the process by which individuals organise and interpret the sensory impression in order to give a meaning to their environment.

Perceptions vary from person to person. Different people perceive different things about the same situation. But more than that, people assign different meanings to what they perceive. And the meanings might change for a certain person.
