Liking this article, Franschhoek Wine Tram? Departing from the central ticket office in Franschhoek at various intervals each morning the Wine Tram serves over 20 wineries via 8 separate lines. There are very few activities more enjoyable than touring the picturesque Franschhoek Valley, sampling wine and tasting local delicacies under a bright autumnal sun. Hermanus is situated on Walker Bay km south east of Cape Town. Most famously known as a prime spot to watch migrating whales Hermanus is also home to a number of magnificent beaches.

For our brief one night stay in Hermanus we again booked accommodation through Air BnB. This time a luxury studio with kitchenette on a residential estate just a 5 minute drive from central Hermanus. With crisp white bed linen, plantation shutters and a fabulous shower this really did feel like luxury. There were also welcome little touches like cookies and fun messages on complimentary bottles of water.

The host was incredibly helpful and provided us with tips for not just Hermanus but the rest of the Garden Route. These will crop up later.

As we visited Hermanus in early March we were unfortunately outside of whale watching season. Prior to our visit a friend told us of his visit to Hermanus and the amazing sight of pods of whales visible from land. However, September to November are the months where you are almost guaranteed to see whales. This must be a fabulous sight and one we definitely plan on catching at some point in the future.

However we chose not to take this additional drive on our way to our next stop as it would have added close to km to our journey.

However, with the benefit of hindsight we do wish we had. The third stop on our itinerary and arguably the first actually part of the Garden Route was Oudsthoorn. Oudsthoorn is the principal town of the Klein Karoo region of the Western Cape, a semi-desert area similar to the Australian Bush. Our pre-trip research had highlighted this as an area to visit as its activities and landscapes differ to the Garden Route itself.

Le Petit Karoo, as the name suggests, is a french owned 3 star guest house. Situated on the top of a hill the area offers fabulous views over the surrounding Klein Karoo. The food is exquisite and like us you should try this at least once during your stay. For our visit Pascal prepared a healthy serving of vegetable tart to start, followed by the most beautifully cooked piece of game either of us had tasted in a very long time.

I chose Kudu whilst Nicki pumped for the ostrich. Both were amazingly tender and moist. I have to start this section with a warning. The natural beauty of these various structures is undeniable. They also make you feel incredibly small and irrelevant when you consider the length of time over which they have formed. No — that looks nothing like Father Christmas or an angel!

We were therefore undecided as to whether we should visit the Cango Caves even though they are just a short drive from Le Petit Karoo. The Cango Caves are situated in a limestone ridge and it is this that has led to the drip stone caverns, halls and formations you can visit today. The Heritage tour forms the first hour of the Adventure tour.

The additional difficulty of the Adventure tour comes in the last 30 minutes when narrower passageways are journeyed down.

For this reason there is a warning to those that suffer from claustrophobia not to opt for this tour. We chose the simpler Heritage Tour as it seemed more tourist friendly and we were not enamoured by the thought of the tighter sections of the Adventure Tour. Given our lack of enthusiasm we were somewhat ambivalent about what was to come as we turned in to the first chamber.

However, what lay ahead was incredible. The guide only added to our enjoyment. He was simply magnificent.

  6. Without the acoustics he would have been magnificent but with them the hairs stood up on the back of my neck and I had a lump in my throat. Despite our initial reticence we thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Cango Caves. An hour was the perfect length to take in the stunning formations enhanced by the fabulous talents of our guide. It is so close you can actually see the lush lawn in front of the winery from the slopes of Le Petit Karoo.

As we arrived after our visit to Cango Caves it was lunchtime but we were the only people there. Not a good sign we thought.

    All around the world

However, we were proved incredibly wrong! A perfect description for this Klein Karoo region. A privately owned wine and fruit farm surrounded by the Swartberg Mountains the Karusa Winery makes for a perfect lunch setting. As they are based on white and red wines respectively we opted for the lifestyle and terroir specific collections.

As you can see from the photo you receive a generous sample too. We opted for the lifestyle and terroir specific collections as these were based on white and red wines. The Karusa Winery lunch menu includes cheese and meat sharing platters. After a morning visiting the Cango Caves these were too tempting so we ordered a couple to share.

These proved as delicious as the wine. Clearly not satisfied we also ordered the liqueur collection as there were a couple of interesting sounding dessert wines I wanted to try. Their port style red was exquisite and we bought a box of three to take home to the UK. During our month in South Africa we tasted a large amount of wine. The understated Karusa Winery was up amongst the very best. Known for its long white sandy beach and natural lagoons Wilderness is bordered by the Indian Ocean to the south and the Outeniqua Mountains to the north.

It was also just a 3 minute drive or 15 minute walk along the lagoon from Wilderness. This location and the proximity to Wilderness along a quiet road was perfect for our morning run. The heat was not unbearable and the mostly flat route was ideal. Prior to starting our Garden Route road trip we were adamant we would be active and constantly out in the great South African outdoors.

With its many activities Wilderness proved to be the ideal stop for us to follow through on this promise. Our hike in Wilderness was the first real opportunity on our route so far and to be honest we were in for a bit of a shock. This will save you hundreds should you want to be active along your Garden Route road trip.

Despite the charge the Giant Kingfisher trail is a thoroughly enjoyable walk. It is neither too easy nor challenging and will bring you out in a good sweat. There are also fabulous views along the river and opportunities to spot many species of birds. If only we knew what they all were! For additional exercise the trail includes an interesting hand pulled ferry across the river. At the beginning of our walk this was very straightforward to operate. However, inexplicably on our return it was definitely harder to move. With its abundance of natural water ways Wilderness is a popular location for canoeing excursions.

After our experience in the Orange river on the border between Namibia and South Africa we definitely wanted to do this again. Pin it to your board for later! As inexperienced canoers the Kaaiman estuary proved a perfect spot for us. A limbo under a small bridge and you head to a beautiful secluded waterfall no more than meters from the rental departure point.

In the opposite direction approximately meters away a small weir can be found after canoeing past several delightful holiday homes overlooking the Kaaimans River. Our canoe trip of one hour was more serene than strenuous. However, it was a beautiful spot and there is something very calming about being on the water under sunny skies near a waterfall.

Although a small coastal town with a population of less than 7, people Wilderness boasts some great restaurants and coffee shops.
