Stellenbosch University, South Africa, 6 to 8 April PhD training is seen as a major way to shape not only the capacities for scientific competitiveness but also the skills of future business, social and political leaders.
This holds true for PhD training in all fields of science, to the extent that such training has become a key instrument of international research capacity building-initiatives in countries of the Global South. Yet, while many reflections of initiatives focus on the opportunity-structures of pursuing PhD studies, we still lack longitudinal, comparative studies of African PhD trainees and their negotiations between international and national funding, career scripts, and the social and economic demands of their own and host countries.
This workshop aims at closing this gap. Dynamic organizational, cultural and individual factors shape the career perspectives and prospects of PhD candidates.
