This is emblematic of the extent to which place names are vested with historical, political, economic and symbolic value.

In addition to protests lodged through official channels, such as the South African Geographical Names Council and parliament, dissent about the name change has largely taken the form of attempts to prevent the use of the new name in public spaces and fora such as advertising, television, and road signs.

This paper explores this material dissent with reference to the landscape of place name changes in South Africa and argues that the resistance has taken the form that it has because of a concerted attempt to prevent the 'performance' of the new name, since this would give the new name validity.

Preliminar research indicated that many of the local powerbrokers who emerged as war leaders during this period also occupied easily locations or well-fortified villages with access to trade routes.

Archaeological investigations at the hilltop site of Yalingbong reveal that the community was well-situated to take advantage of increased trading opportunities but that status differences within the communities are not marked. Rather than privileging these large-scale processes, however, recent work in ethnohistory and history has focused on delineating change as experienced at the local level.

This dissertation is an investigation of such local level change as it occurred in Sisalaland, northern Ghana, an area inhabited by 'decentralised' societies that was heavily impacted by slave-raiding in the latter part of the nineteenth century. This is achieved through an historical archaeological study of the fortified hilltop settlement, Yalingbong , that was occupied during the nineteenth century and the early colonial era twentieth century site of Zanbulugu. More specifically, changes in settlement organization, ritual organisation, warfare and defense, and trade patterns that are found in connection with the rise to power of 'big men,' co-incident with increased warfare and slave-raiding in the period post-dating the end of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, are documented.
