Impossible to cuddle up to your partner without falling into the separating ravine! We elected to have massages, and we were disappointed that there was only one therapist, so we had to have massages one after another rather than together. The massage itself was of average quality, and the therapist arrived after the appointment was due to begin.
Unfortunately the worst part of the whole experience was the tasting menu dinner, which was the whole reason for the trip. Pre dinner drinks are extremely awkward as everyone sits around in a quiet lounge waiting to be seated. No staff greeted us, or made much of an effort to be welcoming. After being seated, the chef Chris Papayannes came out and spoke to us about what to expect, he made a good presentation, which had us anticipating a memorable meal, however the reality did not match up to the description. The wine pairing was rather poor, the sommelier was not knowledgable, going as far as admitting that she had never tasted one of the four wines that we were served there is a good wine list to order from a la carte.
The six courses were generally poorly executed. All served cold on a freezing cold night. Flavours were mismatched and in many cases bland. Much emphasis was placed on the use of 'local produce', however, we were given Patagonian squid, Italian truffle, Capetown cheese The worst course was the dessert, which featured an ill conceived beetroot granita which tasted of dirt, paired with sickly sweet white chocolate mousse, bland cake crumbs and salted caramel. Having said that, none of the courses scored more than a 5 out of 10 in my opinion. The breakfast was a better experience than dinner, but again, hot dishes were served warm to cold, and staff were again disinterested.
I will not be visiting Hartford again, and I would not recommend it to anyone else. This historical property was a pleasure to see. The rooms are spacious and well appointed; elegant yet comfortable. The staff is professional, kind hearted, interesting and well trained.
We enjoyed the food - especially breakfast - lovely dining area and good food. We sat for dinner and it was high cuisine and delicious. The tour of the Stud Farm was fantastic, such beautiful horses and surrounding along with the interesting history of the property and of the business of Stud Farms. The gardens and surroundings were well maintained and beyond compare. Absolutely stunning.

My one suggestion would be to offer the high cuisine dinner several times a week with an alternative more "hearty" selection on the other days. I would return in a heartbeat and have already recommended this gorgeous property. Absolutely beautiful location, very quiet and peaceful. Really enjoyed walking through the gardens. Bathroom was lovely - especially loved the bath and products.
Only negative for us, was that for the price, we felt the in room facilities could have been better: a coffee machine perhaps, and the firewood didn't really burn well so we weren't able to enjoy the fireplace for very long. Having spent three impressive nights at Hertford House on a previous occasion after a close friend's recommending the Hartford experience, I had the good fortune of being invited to another good friend's wedding at Hartford House in May From the time that one enters the grounds driving along the tree-lined country lane to the impressive entrance with its definitive gates one is treated to an experience that is luxurious and memorable beyond compare.
The main Hartford House building was constructed in the 's out of large sand-stone brick slabs and stands in its virtually original form amidst perfectly manicured, fairy-tale-like gardens with the unspoilt rolling hills of the beautiful Natal Midlands as a backdrop to a setting that would not be out of place in a Jane Austen novel. This does not compromise the modern-day comforts that are to be expected from a five-star Boutique Hotel offering and in the case of Hartford House, this is taken to the next level with each of its suites being uniquely adorned with furnishing, decor and relics from around the globe thanks to owner, Cheryl Goss's, extensive travels and equally gifted eye for interior decorating.
Each suite is uniquely names with a written account of such in each room which adds to the charm of the experience. Top-of-the-range percale cotton linen, bathrobes, complimentary slippers, bath salts and top-of-the range Charlotte Rhys toiletries tick the "luxury pampering" check-box. Underfloor heating and fireplaces are provided for those chilly winter nights along with a generously filled bottle of Sherry which is replenished daily to ensure a truly restful night's sleep and pleasant stay all year round!
Special mention must be made of the "Nhlanhla" Suite which not only has a private, exclusive-use swimming pool, but also features a custom-made copper bath. Having stayed at the Nhlanhla and the Assylum Suites, can vouch that each are magnificent in their own right and would recommend the garden suites one of which is Assylum , the Veranda Suites or Manor House Suites over the Lakeside Suites if one is prefers to stay closer to the Main House itself.
Dining at Hartford is equally special with renowned chefs preparing predominantly fine-dining meals using mostly locally-sourced ingredients, with some of the herbs and fresh vegetables being grown in the Hartford grounds.

A al-a-carte dinner menu is on offer although the five-course wine-pairing dinner experience is recommended for at least one night of one's stay. Breakfasts are a treat to be savoured with the finest cheeses, fruit juices, health breads, muesli and freshly prepared hot meals, being served on the veranda. A cafe lunch menu with very unique and delicious offerings ranging from basic sandwiches through to kimchi-garnished meals being served on the more-recently, 21st century-built garden restaurant. On my last stay fellow guests and I were treated to owner and well-known horse-racing personality, Mick Goss, taking us on the tour of the Stud Farm and sharing his wealth of knowledge about the history of the local area and farm with us.
Mick's passion for horses is infectious and the Summerhill Farm's efforts in developing knowledge and expertise in the industry through the academy is an impressive as the expanse of the farm itself. Anyone who has the slightest interest in horses will be in for a treat. Although dinner at Hartford House may be considered by some to be on the pricier side, the overall value-offering for the unique Hartford experience is exceptional.
Being situated a mere 15 minutes drive from the N3 at Mooi River, one night's stopover at Hartford House to break the drive from Johannesburg to Durban is highly recommended but ideally at least a two-night stay is needed to do justice to this magnificent establishment. Very dissapointed. The food was below par and the wine pairing was actually quite bad.
